SCUBA Trips
Dixie makes a perfect base for your SCUBA trips. Start with the historic City of Hawkinsville, underwater state park, near the Nature Coast Greenway crossing of the Suwannee. Also, Fanning Springs is rated highly as an open water dive and Manatee Springs offers cave diving for certified divers. Within 50 miles in almost any direction, still more dives await you.
Public Notices
The lands which are now Dixie County have a rich history. With the Steinhatchee River on the west and the Suwannee River on the east, it was prime land for the Native Americans and early settlers.
According from one source, the first white man to come to the Dixie area was in 1820, a young man named George Miller who was from North Carolina.
He became friends with Suwannee and Bowlegs, Native Americans, and sons of Chief Tigertail and his wife, Suwannee, of the Seminole tribe, who settled in the region around Lake Miccosukee near what is now Tallahassee. With the blessings of the Indians, Miller settled in the area. He planted corn and peanuts and raised cattle and hogs. Ten years later he was to die from malaria and buried into what is now known as Old Town.

Bag A Red Belly
Every mile of the Suwannee River in Dixie County offers great fishing opportunities. If trophy bass aren't striking, probably a bait on bottom will fetch a gorgeous catfish or a cricket will bag a red belly. Some of the best freshwater fishing is among the tributary creeks of the Lower Suwannee. Try Monden and Shingle Creeks!

THINGS TO DO IN DIXIE
The Nature Coast State Trail provides an excellent opportunity to experience the Sunshine State’s Natural North Florida.
An equestrian trail parallels 4.5 miles of the paved trail from Old Town to Fanning Springs.
